Concepts In Hand Rehabilitation by Stanley and Tribuzi
This book was one of the required texts in our OT and Biomechanics class. I am currently an OT student on Fieldwork). This book contains an abundance of useful information. Although it was published in 1992, it has great value. The 17 chapters are: Functional Anatomy; Wound Healing; Clinical Evaluation; Sensibility Testing; Functional Evaluation; Wound Management; Therapeutic Exercise; Physical Agents & Electrotherapy Techniques; Splinting; Skeletal Injuries; Nerve Injuries; Tendon Injuries; Rheumatoid Arthritis; Cumulative Trauma; Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy; Traumatic Injuries of the Hand (crush injuries & amputations); Returning the Hand-Injured Patient to Work. In addition, there are appendixes that include procedure for taking volumetric, goniometric, and strength measurements. While you do need more detailed for modalities, splinting, exercise, and gonimetric measurements, this book is a helpful review of these topics. The entire book is well-organized throughout( i.e.any subheadings, etc.) which makes it an even more valuable reference and study tool. There are some good colored pictures depicting wounds, lots of black and white pictures depicting various treatments. The book also contains lots of good treatment ideas as well. Case studies at end of appropriete chapters do a great job of tying all the material in a chapter together. I feel this book should be a part of the professional library of any student or practicing OT.

Consciousness and Society
Published in Paperback by Transaction Pub (July, 2002)
Authors: H. Stuart Hughes and Stanley Hoffmann
Average review score:

Positivistic Influences
This is an important book that is deservedly back in print and well worth reading at a time when we seem to be reliving the mistakes of the positivistic surge at the end of the nineteenth century, deja vu all over again. The crash of the Hegelian movement and the reversal of thought in the post-Hegelian generation saw many influenced by the (quite metaphysical) Comtean positivism, among them none other than Charles Darwin. The effect is practically cast in granite in the works of Marx who unwittinlgy signatures the trend. The tide of positivism carrying its distinct set of hidden metaphysical premises and limits was fairly well exposed at the time, but in the age of dominant Darwinism it has made a comeback in disguise. Hughes goes through the whole development tracing the stream of influences and gives us an significant portrait of intellectual history we seemed doomed to relive none the wiser. (Reviewed from memory, I think I got it right)

Cosmos and Creator
Published in Paperback by Scottish Academic Pr (December, 1981)
Author: Stanley L. Jaki
Average review score:

Excellent
This work, published in 1980, is perhaps the best introduction and summary of Stanley Jaki's ideas on the relationship between science, cosmology, and religion. It is considerably less dense than some of his other works and, as he tells us, was written specifically as a concise treatment of his views.

Each chapter provides a good overview of the topic at hand. For example, the chapter entitled "The Dogma of Creation" is particularly thorough. It is common to assert that the dogma of creatio ex nihilo is not found in the Old Testament but came about as a result of the influence of Greek thought. But as Jaki shows, the concept is at least implied in the opening chapter of Genesis. He provides a discussion of supposed similarities between Genesis and the Sumerian creation story Enumah Elish. He then surveys the New Testament and Gnostic literature and presents a fascinating discussion of the claim that creatio ex nihilo is a Greek idea. He quotes from Plato and Aristotle statements in which they unambiguously reject the concept. The chapter concludes with a discussion of Medieval, Jewish, Moslem and modern thought on the subject. Particularly fascinating is Jaki's discussion of the question of whether the doctrine may properly be called "Judeo-Christian" in light of certain strands in Jewish thought.

Cracking the Language Code: German
Published in Paperback by Templegate Pub (October, 1982)
Author: Stanley Rundle
Average review score:

a great way to develop reading knowledge of the language
This is one of the most fascinating language books I have read. Rundle's goal is to develop reading knowledge, as distinct from writing, speaking, and verbal comprehension. His hypothesis is that European languages are sufficiently similar that, with a few rules and occasional resort to the dictionary, you can quickly learn to puzzle out written material. Along the way, he has a great romp through linguistic history. Highly recommended.

Craving for Ecstasy : How Our Passions Become Addictions and What We Can Do About Them
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (August, 1998)
Authors: Harvey Milkman and Stanley Sunderwirth
Average review score:

The cutting edge on addiction technology
This book is a must for anyone who wants to understand the physiological process involved in addiction and compulsive behavior. The biggest revelation of this book is that all addictions whether they are substance or behavior based such as gambling, are caused by natural neurochemicals in the brain.

In an era when addiction is running rampant. When you can walk into any convenience store and acquire nicotine, alcohol, junk food, lottery tickets and pornography. Harvey Milkman and Stanley Sunderwirth discuss more positive ways of achieving a natural high such as involvement in the arts. It's about changing negative behaviors that destroy life into positive ones that add to life.
